What is Group Psychotherapy?
Group psychotherapy is an effective form of therapy in which a small number of people (typically 6-8) meet under the guidance of a professionally trained therapist – in this case, me! It aims to help people manage mental health conditions or cope with negative experiences and behaviours.
Although there are several different approaches to group therapy, you can be rest assured that all sessions provide you with a safe and supportive environment – what’s said in group, stays in group.
Who is it for?
Group psychotherapy can be beneficial for anyone. Sharing personal experiences with a group of strangers may feel intimidating at first however, it may be more rewarding than you think.
Whether it’s anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, addiction or anything else, group therapy can offer you a safe and confidential space to open up and talk things through.

What should I expect?
While each group therapy session is different, they typically consist of 6-8 participants who are all in similar circumstances. However, they may not all be dealing with the same problem. Sessions tend to last for around two hours, either on a weekly or fortnightly basis, and will take place either in person or online.
My role as a therapist is to ensure that groups are formed with the right mix of people so that everyone has the support they need. Each session will give you a safe space to share your problems or concerns, to better understand your own situation, and to learn from and with each other.
We’ll talk about struggles that people are faced with, any accomplishments that people have made, and any thoughts that are on people’s minds. I will ensure that discussions remain productive, on-topic, and safe for everyone. As and when required I will incorporate somatic practices such as breathing techniques and exercises, which will help to give you additional coping mechanisms.
My aim is to create an air of hope, encourage participants to reach out, and ask questions as and when you feel the need.
A final bit of advice…
Remember that you’re not the only one sharing your personal story. Groups work best where there is open and honest communication between members.
What will start out as a group of strangers, will most likely (in a short amount of time) become a valuable and trusted source of support.
