What is Trauma?
- frightened
- under threat
- humiliated
- rejected
- abandoned
- invalidated
- unsafe
- unsupported
- trapped
- ashamed
- powerless
Each and every one of us will react differently when experiencing trauma and what one person perceives as traumatic, may not be for someone else. In some cases, people may not even be aware that they are experiencing a trauma.
The effects of a traumatic experience can present themselves in a multitude of ways – either during the actual event, immediately after, or in some cases after a prolonged amount of time. Either way, trauma can happen at any age and can cause lasting adverse effects, limiting the ability to function and achieve mental, physical, social or emotional well-being.
The good news is that whatever trauma you have experienced, you can heal from it at any moment in time.

Symptoms of Trauma
During extreme stress, the body and mind can become overwhelmed and stimulate a fight or flight response – your body’s natural way of getting you out of danger. Activating this stress response too often, or all the time, can have a detrimental effect on your mental and physical well-being.
Symptoms of trauma can be both emotional and physical and include:
- feelings of fear
- sleep disruptions
- weight changes
- headaches
- increased heart rate
- digestive problems
- weakened immune system
- low sex drive
- lack of focus
- loss of memory
- mood swings
- body aches and pains
These responses may be concerning to those experiencing them however, they are normal responses to traumatic events. By bringing awareness to physical sensations, finding out what they reveal about your past and consciously releasing your trauma, you can optimise your body’s natural healing abilities in order to overcome them.
Post-Traumatic Stress
Symptoms of post-traumatic stress are after-effects of your overwhelmed nervous system, meaning your body and mind can’t fully process the traumatic events that are happening to you. Without professional help, it is possible for the symptoms of trauma to escalate and develop into PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) or potentially become life-threatening if they are not addressed correctly.
Common symptoms of PTSD include:
- intrusive thoughts
- avoiding things that remind you of trauma (eg. people, places or objects)
- being very aware of danger
- being easily startled or ‘jumpy’
- changes in behaviour and how you see yourself, such as feeling excessive guilt or shame
- being easily overwhelmed
- having difficulty controlling your emotions
These responses may be concerning to those experiencing them however, they are normal responses to traumatic events. By bringing awareness to physical sensations, finding out what they reveal about your past and consciously releasing your trauma, you can optimise your body’s natural healing abilities in order to overcome them.
